Instrument Assisted Massage (IAM)
Chartered Physiotherapy in Blackpool, St. Annes, Lytham, Poulton, Cleveleys and FleetwoodInstrument assisted massage (or tool assisted massage) is a massage technique that uses stainless steel tools to deliver a deep tissue treatment that restores soft tissue structures and promotes healing. Strong but incredibly effective (according to research), some studies have said that IAM can cut recovery times by up to a third.
What are the benefits of IAM?
The therapist gains increased sensation and feedback (as well as easing some of the pressure they get on their hands) so they are able to react better to any client discomfort and provide improved results. Functionally, the tool has been ergonomically designed to fit the contours of the body at various points, with each edge of a tool useful for different areas. Used to treat different soft tissue structures in the body, applying the tool with pressure can help to release tension, aid the healing of tears and abrasions, and force muscles back into alignment. By stimulating blood flow, the body is persuaded to make new soft tissue and decrease the sensitivity of the area (as backed up by a number of research studies). Studies have also found that, when combined with other physiotherapy treatments, IAM can also help to decrease the number of physiotherapy sessions needed to reach recovery.
