Chartered Physiotherapy in Blackpool, St. Annes, Lytham, Poulton, Cleveleys and FleetwoodWhat is pilates?
Pilates is a system of stretches, poses and exercises that aim to increase core strength and flexibility across the body. It is generally conducted in a slow and co-ordinated way in tandem with deliberate breathing exercises. “Core stability” is a term that’s widely used amongst personal trainers and athletes looking to improve their overall performance. However, it is commonly misunderstood to just mean increasing the strength of the stomach muscles. In fact, a stable core requires strong and controlled back and limb muscles to support the body through the spine and abdomen.
How can pilates support physiotherapy?
Particularly helpful in people with back problems, pilates is often recommended by physiotherapists for clients who need to improve their overall conditioning in a controlled way. The ideal complement to other, more targeted treatments, it can strengthen smaller, weakened muscle groups and increase stability around known vulnerabilities, supporting recovery.
