What is Joint Hypermobility Syndrome (JHS)?

Hypermobility is a chronic, lifelong condition where sufferers experience a much larger range of movement around their joints than normal – sometimes known as “double-jointedness”. Extremely supple, for some (ballet dancers and gymnasts) this can be a benefit and they may not experience many other symptoms. For others it can be a debilitating and painful condition that is also linked to gastric problems. Because the joints are much more mobile, dislocations may be common as well as dysfunctional muscle patterns which can lead to sprains and strains as the ligaments and tendons are stretched into unnatural positions to support the joints.

How do you treat hypermobility?

Hypermobility is a complex condition, and we start by taking a full and thorough examination so we can tailor your treatment to your specific symptoms and history. Treatment is multi-faceted and can include a combination of manual therapy (massage), joint mobilisation, muscle or soft tissue mobilisation techniques, electrotherapy, postural re-education, corrective exercises to improve mobility, strength, balance, proprioception and fitness, and core muscle strengthening. We’ll also provide as much advice as we can on how you can manage your condition better.
