What is Shockwave Therapy?

Shockwave therapy is a non-invasive treatment which stimulates cell regeneration to reduce pain and restore damaged tissue. Administered via a hand-held device, impulses of energy are delivered at specialised frequencies capable of breaking down fibrous scar tissue, making it particularly effective in the management of chronic conditions which have failed to respond to other therapeutic modalities.

There are various types of shockwave therapy. At JAMPhysio, we use focused shockwave therapy. In contrast to other methods, it allows clinicians to send targeted sound waves directly to where they are needed most, leading to faster and more effective results.

What does Shockwave Therapy feel like?

Focused shockwave therapy should not cause discomfort for you. One of the huge benefits of this treatment is that it only targets one area. This means you’re unlikely to feel any differences anywhere else in the body.

During the treatment, you’ll be asked to report any pain you feel as the therapy replicates your pain. The sensations you may feel will depend on the area being targeted.

On healthy tissue, you may not experience any pain but may feel a slight pinching sensation. On problematic tissue, you are likely to feel a replication of the pain and some aching too – this should ease in less than 60 seconds. These sensations are similar when the therapy is used on problematic bone.

A focused shockwave treatment lasts between 6 and 12 minutes. If you experience prolonged pain, the therapist may stop the treatment for a short while and then continue. Most patients have the treatment every 3 – 7 days.

What does shockwave therapy treat?

Shockwave therapy is used to treat and reduce pain in many conditions. These include:

  • Tendon pathologies
  • Ligament injuries
  • Bursitis
  • Plantar Fasciitis
  • Stress fractures
  • Meniscal tears
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Cellulite

What are the benefits of shockwave therapy?

Fast-acting pain relief

Focused shockwave therapy provides fast pain relief, with some patients reporting a fifty percent decrease in pain after just one treatment. However, pain reduction does not mean that damaged tissues are completely healed, and you will need to attend subsequent sessions for the best results.

Restoration of function

Shockwave therapy improves function and movement. Whether you are suffering from bursitis, tendinopathy, or any other of the many conditions it has been shown to manage effectively, you will be able to move more easily following this safe and non-invasive treatment.

Where appropriate, we offer shockwave therapy as part of your treatment plan. Your physiotherapist will assess your symptoms and advise you on how many sessions you will need to reduce pain and restore function.
