What is Functional Movement Screening?
Suffering from pain during sport, at home or at work? Functional Movement Screening (FMS) is an assessment of the movements that are essential to your daily life. If you’re susceptible to repetitive injuries, want to prevent future injury, or simply want to return to activity after an injury or break, FMS can be really useful. Through a series of questions and movement exercises, your physiotherapist will use the FMS framework to expose dysfunction and asymmetry in the body that could lead to problems, helping you to boost performance and correct your technical and postural movements.
What should I expect?
With a strong background in sports medicine and biomechanics, our chartered physiotherapists are well placed to listen to you and your body before recommending any treatment plans. FMS is most useful for sportspeople and those recovering from complex fractures, where postural alignment is key. It involves finding the seven most common movements you use in everyday life (whether sporting, occupational or simply moves you make regularly) and scoring them out of 21. We’ll ask you to perform the movements in comfortable sportswear and barefoot, so we can see their effects on your feet and body. We’ll then talk you through the results in plain English, using them as the basis for a treatment plan to help you to correct any dysfunction and increase performance.
Often forming a part of our initial assessment process (depending on your condition and reason for trying physiotherapy), FMS can be a highly effective way to identify weaknesses and areas more prone to injury, as well as getting to the root cause of any problems.
